Insight Gained
The most expensive mistakes in product development are the ones that feel like certainties until someone tests them. User testing does not just validate ideas — it exposes the ones that would have been built regardless, and shouldn't have been.
Nikkei Business Lab Asia Ltd identified a significant gap in the global market for business education content. Established platforms such as Harvard Business Publishing gave educators access to high-quality case study material, but their libraries were overwhelmingly Western in focus. Professors teaching in Asian markets, or seeking to incorporate Asian business contexts into their courses, had little relevant material to draw on.
The business idea was to build a direct competitor from scratch: a dedicated digital platform offering analytically rigorous case studies centred on Asian businesses. The primary market was academic — professors and their students — with a secondary opportunity in business professionals and consultants seeking high-quality, regionally relevant market intelligence.
The platform needed to serve two distinct audiences. For educators, it had to support content discovery, classroom integration, and structured discussion. For business professionals and consultants, it needed to function as a source of rigorous, regionally relevant market intelligence.
Beyond the product itself, the platform had to be commercially viable from launch, scalable as the content library grew, and designed so that Nikkei Business Lab Asia Ltd could operate and develop it independently — without ongoing reliance on ddx.
The workshops established a shared view of the business model, user needs, operational requirements, and competitive context. A Lean UX Canvas structured those discussions and aligned stakeholders around the core problems and opportunities.
Workshop outputs informed the development of user personas, customer journeys, and wireframes — grounding design decisions in research rather than assumption. ddx then developed click-through prototypes tested with representative users, whose feedback directly shaped subsequent design and functionality decisions.
The build phase was structured as a series of agile sprints, with sustained client involvement to manage scope, budget, and timeline. From the outset, the platform was designed to be self-managed by the client after handover. Operational independence was a defined requirement, not an afterthought.
Handover was managed as a structured process rather than a transaction. The Nikkei Business Lab Asia Ltd team received full documentation covering platform architecture, content management, and operational procedures, supported by training to ensure they could manage and develop the product confidently from day one. The objective throughout was to leave the client with genuine capability, not dependency.
The platform has since continued to grow on its own terms. The initial library of approximately 20 articles and case studies now stands at more than 120, developed and managed entirely by the client — which is, in many respects, the most straightforward measure of a successful handover.
The most significant discovery came during prototype testing. The original commercial model assumed professors would purchase access directly, via a standard card payment flow. User research overturned this: purchasing decisions for academic content sit with university administrators, not the academics using the material, and procurement follows a formal invoicing and purchase order process. Catching this before build meant the payment architecture could be designed correctly from the start rather than rebuilt after the fact.
The project demonstrated what structured discovery delivers when entering an unfamiliar market: the cost of a false assumption caught in a user testing session is considerably lower than one caught in production.
